Our iPhone App and Promotions Videos

Wow what an amazing few weeks its been! We launched our first iPhone app on July 12th. The 1st week’s results have exceed our expectations and the numbers keep on growing.

The app is Ask Dave Ramsey and is based off our website, daveramsey.com, tool called Ask Dave. The app is pretty cool and quite a bit different than most of the other apps in the App store. The “Ask Dave Ramsey” app taps into our database of 2,000+ calls on the Dave Ramsey Radio Show where Dave takes questions on life and money then answers those questions live on air. The questions are answered both in a transcript and audio format. It’s pretty slick and has been received well by our fan base.

The Results so Far

  • Hit #1 in the Free Finance Category
  • Made it to a featured spot on the New list and the New and Noteworthy list
  • Made it to a #60 rating in overall apps
  • 70,000 downloads of the app in the first 9 days!
  • Tons of 4 and 5 star reviews with the occassional “hater”

A couple of promotional videos were produced and released on youtube. Blake Thompson shows you how to use the app, Ask Dave Ramsey initial launch demo.

Special kudos to our MyTotalMoneyMakeover.com business and development teams as well as our vendor sixvoices.com. Great job everyone!

It’s been a great step in leveraging mobile media for our company. With all the fervor surrounding this one right now, I’m looking forward to seeing what’s next.

Omniture Press Release featuring DaveRamsey.com

I was excited to see that some hard work finally paid off. It was 2 years ago that we decided to use Omniture as our web analytics provider. By July 2007, we had completed our implementation and had started leveraging analytics to improve our website. We’ve been very pleased with Omniture’s tools and have seen some very good results.

One of the challenges and goals our web team has set is to become influencers of the web and internet technology. While we are relatively small business at 260 employees with 55 web staff members, we have been able to make some headway into getting noticed by other web professionals and businesses.

Some of the highlights for 2008 included

  • Mapquest mapping technology. One of the first companies to leverage their new API toolset (visit post on webmonkeyswithlaserbeams.wordpress.com

    Post 2
  • Automated streaming and podcast posting system. Streaming archives are live on our site 15 minutes within of The Dave Ramsey Show ending. Podcasts are available within 1 hour. The entire system is automated which includes cutting out the commercials.
  • Unique usage of Omniture marketing tools for geo-targeting. We implemented what we call geo-exclusion marketing to present relevant ads to state specific markets.

In 2008, we were able to step up our involvement with Omniture by conducting an interview with John Broady which he later posted on his blog. This interview covered our implementation and results of leveragin Omniture’s Test and Target marketing tool. In February 2009, I was invited to the Omniture Summit MindMeld. The MindMeld was a great opportunity to network with some of the industries leaders like Sony, Orbitz, Time Warner, Comcast, and a few others.

As a continuation of our Omniture efforts, Omniture put out a press release today which was picked up by Yahoo. View the press release.

Dave Ramsey’s Town Hall for Hope

I normally don’t talk about work projects on my blog, but I’m a little giddy right now. We’re under the 24 hour mark until Dave takes the stage in Oklahoma City. If you haven’t heard about the Town Hall for Hope event, check it out at townhallforhope.com.

A ton of work has gone into getting out this message of Hope out to America. Now that the event is almost here, I’m getting more excited by the minute about seeing it!!! If you want to see it, you can tune into Fox Business Channel Thursday night or find a location at townhallforhope.com. I encourage you to find a location and watch it with people. There’s nothing quite like being around people as the get inspired about life and their future. Fox Business will also be rerunning the event over the weekend.

To share just a little about the event prep. In just over 5 weeks time, we planned, prepped and executed a strategy to pull off the project. It was a huge company effort. Here’s a quick overview of the project.

  • Website (including signup, video, location registration, zipcode locator, dashboard…did I leave anything out?)
  • Social media (YouTube, Facebook, Twitter)
  • Promotional materials for the event locations (I’ve seen banners all over Franklin, TN)
  • Streaming systems and testing for 6,000 locations and close to 1 million viewers (It’s been insane over the last 5 days)
  • Materials preparation for Dave
  • Lot’s of email communication to our fans and the attendees
  • Lots and lots of meetings and follow-up
  • Great American Businesses support tools to help fund the event
  • Promotions campaign on daveramsey.com

Major props to Akamai, Multicast Media (see press release) and LifeChurch.tv for all the work they have put into making this event a success! Multicast and LifeChurch.tv have gone way beyond the call of duty to see this event deliver Dave’s message of Hope. Their teams are INCREDIBLE! Thank you more than you can ever know.

Tune in for the event! Don’t miss it!

One Long Day

Okay, so you take the good with the bad. Unfortunately not every day can be a bed of roses. Today was one of those days.

Things don’t always go according to plan. You know that. My plans this week. Enjoy a nice weekend off with my kids during their spring break. Travel down to Atlanta and take my boys to the Lego Store. Sounds nice. Didn’t happen.

Step back 2 weeks to a meeting on a Monday night. Lots of excitement. 20 people. One jazzed up CEO…Dave Ramsey, a force of nature. One of the incredible things about Dave is his unmatched energy and passion for reaching people. When those two things line up on a project, lives will be changed and people will be busy…ASAP style.

In week 1, we had 2 meetings to discuss followed by a 3rd meeting the next week to finalize the details. After that, we were off to the races. A concept. A website. An 8 day delivery. Here are the results. http://www.townhallforhope.com (more components to launch Monday)

Fast forward to today.  Our dev team went in at 11:30 am last night and started the launch at 12:00 am today. Along with the site launch, the guys worked in a much needed server upgrade. All went well and the app servers are beautiful. The architecture is beautiful. The firewalls…not so beautiful. The morning started out well and then headed south around 3:00 PM. I knew it would happen, and it did. Dreaded deviation from the plan. It always happens so you have to account for it.

Dave was excited about about the project today as we all are. He went to air today and BAM! There it was, the announcement of Town Hall for Hope on the radio! 24 hours earlier than we planned. Expecting it, I smiled, and the team scurried to get up the graphics on daveramsey.com. It’s one of the things that makes life on our team fun and so very much better than other dull jobs.

All was going well then the chaos began. Dropped connections to servers. Server availability to visitors. The nightmare began. The team handled it well, but it sure would have been better day without it. Even with the issues, the day ended well with over 1,000 churches signing up to carry Dave’s Town Hall for Hope webcast on April 23rd. Hopefully, tomorrow will be much better.

I commend our team. 30 guys busting it since 11:30 PM Tuesday night till 4:30 PM today. Dedication to our mission, our technology, and reaching people to change their lives. Thanks team! http://webmonkeyswithlaserbeams.wordpress.com
